Parallel to the long dimension of the room is the usual choice. Wood is often laid perpendicular to the joists (doesn't have to be), but there's no structural element with vinyl, so do whichever looks best to you.

I like light colored floors, but that's strictly personal preference, no right or wrong choices. Going with wood in it's natural color without added stain eliminates a raft of problems. (obviously not an issue for vinyl)
